Sunday Mass #14 | The Virus Broadcasts (Day 10) | VJ Pirate Radio
The Spin:
Welcome to the spin where I recap the most recent episode and share my connections with the records and tales delivered by Sam. Today's Sunday mass was the second during the COVID - 19 outbreak. Unfortunately a late nights work on Saturday left me fast asleep during the live broadcast, I did catch up later Sunday evening while catching up at work.
For me Sunday Mass lives up to its namesake. I grew up in a church, my dad was a pastor and living in the Bible belt, religion was the center of most people's lives. As I've gotten older and further away from denominational religion (that's a whole can of worms to unpack another time) I find my God to be most present when listening to music, especially with other people. Maren Morris said as much in one of my favorite modern country songs My Church where she sings about driving down the road listening to music and feeling the Holy Ghost running through her. A must listen!
Sam did a beautiful job reflecting on what it means to not only be a VJ Patron, or a vinyl finatic, but a human being and how important it is to be kind to one another. The focal point of the episode was the ORG Music pressing of Billie Holiday: Live at Storyville. Interwoven were Singalongs with the late Kenny Rodgers, Jazz that was influential to Sam and a part of the VJ cannon. Also, there were emotional recantations of Sam's reading of Lee Myself and I where we got to learn about some of the last moments of his life and how his songs can apply to all of us.
I already owned the Billie Holiday record, and this episode gave it new meaning, and attached a memory to it that will always stay with me. In the same vein, as soon as I heard of Kenny Rogers' passing I immediately took a trip to the VJ store to pick up The Gambler. I already knew all the words and being able to sing along is making me even more exited for it to arrive.
I will be going back and gathering the song lists for previous episodes as I have the time. I hope everyone is staying safe!
